Something, that seems to be very strange: you lost your CD Key for a WinXP installation CD. You might think you could loose the CD, too. Wrong. Just follow the lead on http://ehacks.wordpress.com/2008/01/11/how-to-find-your-windows-xp-produ... and voila there you go.

According to the wordpress documentation wordpress will automatically create working rewrite rules for user-friendly permalinks.

This is annoyingly wrong. It just does not. I have been fumbling around with it quite some time while trying to enable permalinks for bohle-echo.de. Turning the RewriteLog engine on I found that requested sites are simply passed through rewrite directly to apache filesystem access. Obviously this leads to 404-errors.
